During the opening session they were greeted by Dr. Elena Lenchuk, director of IE RAS, and Dr. Victoria Panova, managing director of the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research, Vice President for International Relations, Far Eastern Federal University. The presenters pointed out how relevant the topic of the conference is and how important the BRICS countries' national strategies are for both meeting challenges multiplied by the pandemic and positioning BRICS in the world as far as the following matters are concerned: overcoming nationalism in production and distribution of vaccines, stabilizing economies, developing human capital, etc.

H.E. Mr. Pavel Knyazev, Ambassador-at-large, Russian Sous-Sherpa in BRICS, deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Foreign Policy Planning Department, spoke about the main results of Russia's BRICS presidency in 2020. He mentioned a number of Russia's initiatives aimed at overcoming the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and expressed hope that these initiatives will be supported during India's BRICS presidency.

The key initiatives regarding economic cooperation between the five countries were highlighted by Dr. Natalya Stapran, director of the Department for Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. She mentioned that the stable economic performance of the BRICS countries makes it possible to implement the Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership 2025. Dr. Mikhail Golovnin, associate member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, first deputy director of IE RAS, moderated the plenary session.

A plenary paper on priorities set by India for the year of its BRICS presidency was presented by Amb. H. H. S. Viswanathan, distinguished fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, India's leading research center, who spoke about imperfection of mechanisms for multilateral cooperation existing in the world, as well as about the necessity of creating a BRICS working group on sustainable development. From his point of view, it is necessary for both overcoming the consequences of the pandemic and providing a stable basis for future growth. Amb. H. H. S. Viswanathan also reminded the audience about a few BRICS-related anniversaries coming up in the year ahead.

Participants of the conference discussed some problems of economic recovery of the BRICS countries after the COVID-19 pandemic, results of Russia's presidency in the association in 2020, the agenda for the year of India's BRICS presidency, as well as steps the BRICS members can take to promote sustainable and long-term recovery.

In his paper, Dr. Mikhail Golovnin, associate member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, first deputy director of IE RAS, highlighted a number of problems in the financial sphere faced by the BRICS countries in the context of the need for reform of the global financial architecture. He emphasized the role of BRICS in the process of «democratizing» international economic relations. In his speech, Dr. André de Melo e Souza, senior researcher at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA, Brazil), focused on problems of vaccination both in developing and developed countries. He mentioned that in many of them the process of creating and distributing vaccines was politicized, leading to protectionism and causing problems in political relations between countries. Prof. Dr. Georgy Toloraya, the founder of the Center for Russia's Strategy in Asia, IE RAS, and Ms. Valeria Gorbacheva, junior researcher at the Center for Russia's Strategy in Asia, IE RAS, presented a paper on the current epidemiological situation in the BRICS countries and Russia's experience in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and overcoming economic consequences of the pandemic, in the context of the country's BRICS presidency in 2020.

Dr. Alexandra Morozkina, head of the Structural Reforms Division, Economic Expert Group, and Ms. Natalya Krasnopeeva, lead advisor, Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation, spoke about the necessity of using the mechanism of public-private partnership to solve various problems, including infrastructural ones, within BRICS. Mr. Zhaoi Zhu from University of International Business and Economics (Beijing, China) emphasized the importance of developing a digital economy for sustainable economic growth. He suggested that BRICS can initiate the introduction of the new indicators for a digital economy, since existing indicators (GDP, GDP per capita, etc.) are not helpful when it comes to characterizing the situation in this sphere. Mr. Cyril Prinsloo, senior researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), spoke about the short-term prospects for economic cooperation between the BRICS countries. Dr. Irina Korgun, acting head of the Center for Russia's Strategy in Asia, IE RAS, moderated this session of the conference.

Participants of the conference discussed the presented papers. They came up with the ideas about the role of BRICS in a post-pandemic world, the future BRICS agenda, reviewing national development strategies in the face of the new challenges and threats, and some practical measures meant to establish contacts in a pandemic world. The closing remarks were made by Dr. Irina Korgun. The participants of the conference wished India success in the year of its BRICS presidency.
